Don't Forget to Know; How to Start a Cover Letter

Understand Five Parts of Cover Lettering Ending/Closing

Your cover letter closing must have five essential parts. I'm going to describe every single part in detail.

Part #1 Interest and Enthusiasm

You need to showcase your interest in the opening line of your cover letter and closing. Hiring managers would like to make an interview call to people who show great interest in job openings.

Example:

I am excited to appear at this job interview to demonstrate how my writing skills would help your company boost its social media engagement.

Part #2 Making yourself Valuable

It would be best to tell the hiring manager what value you would bring to the company. It's important to say to them how your skills and experience will get value. It's the part when you explain how a company can benefit from your skills and experience. Present yourself as an ASSET to the company.

Example:

I believe that my three years of experience in the management field make me the best fit for this executive role of management in your company.

Part #3 Call to Action

You need to end the cover letter with a call to action. Sharing your contact details and deciding about a time of day when your hiring manager can call or approach you.

Part #4 Closing Salutation

you don't need a generic salutation. Instead, you need something different yet formal. Yours sincerely is a standard closing salutation, but you won't have to go with it all the time.

Do you need the best alternatives or synonyms of Yours Sincerely?

 They are as follows:

  • Kind Regards,
  • Yours Truly,
  • Most Sincerely,
  • Thank you,
  • Thank you for your consideration
  • Respectfully
  • Respectfully yours
  • Sincerely yours
  • With best regards
  • Best
  • Best regards
  •

Closing Salutations to Avoid

When you are sending your cover letter, make sure you don't add the following words as salutations:

  • XOXO,
  • Best wishes,
  • Have a nice day,
  • Warm regards,
  • With love,
  • You in Good Faith,
  • Cheers,
  • Yours Faithfully,
  • Fondly
  • Take it Easy,
  • Take Care,
  • Thnx,
  • :)
  • Cya,
  • Ciao,
  • Affectionately,

Part #5 Signature

If you send an email, then your signature isn't required at all. However, when you write a cover letter in an email, it's essential to add a signature.  Signature by hand is a requirement in formal style cover letters that you write on a professional notepad. Know how to add a signaure in cover letter.

Your email

You will follow this format for signature addition.

  • Best Regards,
  • Your name ... Hanna
  • Your LinkedIn profile URL ..linkedin.com/hanna
  • Your email ... [email protected]
  • Your phone number...151-310-110

Why LinkedIn URL?

You need to add your LinkedIn URL so that a hiring manager can easily explore more about your work history and experience. You might have many endorsements and positive reviews on your LinkedIn profile, which would help create a good impression in your hiring manager's eye.

I strongly suggest updating your LinkedIn profile. Create an enticing profile where your work experience is so evident and apparent. You need to add the most delicate details of your work and experience there. Although a hiring manager has your resume to check your work history, he will explore LinkedIn further.

Why Add your Email?

You are sharing email, so the hiring manager doesn't have to copy and paste it from the id bar. If you have a non-professional id like:

[email protected]

or [email protected]

[email protected]

Indeed, it's the best idea not to use this id for your job application. It would hurt your professional image. You must sound and look professional from every angle. Keep that thing in mind.

Should you add Twitter URL?

Some people share their Twitter details; it's good to share it only when you have some formal and professional tweets. If your Twitter only has funny images, posts, videos, and memes, you can skip it.

In my personal opinion, LinkedIn URL is good enough to make a formal impression on your recruiter.

6 Mistakes to Avoid While Writing Cover letter Ending

Here are some common mistakes every job seeker makes. My intention in creating this post is to highlight all those mistakes that would avoid creating a perfect cover letter.

Mistake No.1 Don't Show Desperation

Sometimes, a job seeker is quite desperate during the job search process. He applies to many job openings but is unable to get any good response. Bad luck lead to Desperation for a job seeker. No matter how important this job is, you can't risk it by showing your Desperation.

Here are two examples:

Please give a chance to prove my skills for your I.T. Team ----- WRONG

I hope you would call me on this job interview --------WRONG.

Words like please, Hope, etc. show that you are desperate for this job and this Desperation won't turn out good for you. A recruiter likes confident candidates with a positive mindset. Therefore, you need to avoid these words.  Show your confidence and keep your self-esteem intact.

Mistake No.2 Being So Casual

Recruiters like to hire professional people, and they don't like it when you sound casual in your cover letter. Your cover letter's tone should be formal if it won't sound professional, how other people would take you seriously for a corporate level job.

It was fun working with my team. I like to make friends. I know that your team will become my buddies soon..WRONG

I enjoy working with like-minded people. If you consider me, you will find a brother in me.. WRONG

Mistake No.3 Being Overconfident

It would help if you portrayed confidence in your cover letter. I did this, or I have done that before. However, what you can't afford to add in your job letter is "Overconfidence."

For example,

Hire me; I know I can do this job better than all other candidates you are going to interview....WRONG

I don't think any other person can bring the same value to your company. ----WRONG

If you don't call me for a job interview, you will regret your decision sooner or later.

The arrogance with overconfidence will ruin your cover letter. Therefore, it's better to stay humble and confident at the same time.

Mistake No.4 Using Humor to Get Attention

The cover letter aims to get attention but doesn't use humor as a magnetic tool. As I told you before, your cover letter must sound professional and formal. There is no room for jokes and punchlines in it. So, please don't add any only to make your cover letter colorful.

Mistake No.5 Very Generic Lines

Some people don't give enough values to cover letters. They copy and paste its template and send it without putting any effort into its ending or closing. You won't repeat the same mistake. You can make the most of a cover letter template but replace generic lines with some specific lines.

I look forward to your response Wrong( no more effective in the corporate world)

You can call me on Thursdays, and we will set an interview schedule ( please don't use it). Wrong

Specific Lines

You can call me on Thursday, and we will discuss how my I.T. skills would add value to your team..... RIGHT

I look forward to becoming a part of your sales team and use my interpersonal skills to win new clients for your business.......RIGHT

Mistake No.6 Not Doing a Proofreading

Once you complete a cover letter, you want to send it quickly so that you can get its response. This kind of attitude is understandable. However, you need to take five more minutes, and these are the critical minutes. You will review your cover letter, every single line of it. Read it from top to bottom.

Don't rely only on a spelling check or some tool. If you don't like to proofread, ask someone who can give attention to details. Spelling errors and grammatical mistakes would make your cover letter look bad. No matter how enticing lines you add to it, if comma and full stop aren't at their right places, simply you lose it all.

You don't want that sort of outcome. So, go and proofread it.

Or Simply ask your friend to do that for you.
